Top 10 NGO in India



HelpAge India is secular, not-for-profit organization registered under the Societies' Registration Act of 1860. It was set up in 1978, and since then have been raising resources to protect the rights of India's elderly and provide relief to them through various interventions.
            The origins of HelpAge India go back to the late 1960s when the then speaker of the Lok Sabha visited his counterpart in the House of Commons(UK), who was also honorary secretary of an organisation called Help The Aged. He came back with a vision of setting up something similar in India.
But it took 7 years for this vision to take shape. In March 1974, when Mr. Jackson Cole, founder of HelpAge International visited India, an intrepid philanthropist named Samson Daniel approached him for financial help to set up a member organisation in Delhi. A far-sighted man, Mr. Cole instead offered to train him to raise funds. After a three month training course in London, Mr. Daniel and his wife returned to India and organised a sponsored walk with schoolchildren in Delhi. It was so successful that in 1975 HelpAge International recruited more staff to cover Bombay, Madras and Calcutta.


2.Smile foundation

Senge's principles find an echo in the ideologies behind Smile Foundation formed in 2002 by a group of corporate professionals who, decided to finance, handhold and support genuine grassroots' initiatives targeted at providing education and health to underprivileged children. In the process, becoming the first ever grantmaker and changing the face of thousands of lives.
    Smile Foundation is to empower underprivileged children and youth through relevant education, innovative healthcare and market-focused livelihood programmes. Smile to deploy best possible methodology and technology for achieving ideal SROI (social return on investment), to practice and promote good governance. To link business competitiveness of the corporate with social development initiatives, also to sensitize privileged children, youth and citizens in general to promote Civic Driven Change. 

3.Sargam sanstha
 Sargam is committed to helping the most vulnerable children,old age and young people in the India break through injustice, deprivation and inequality, so they can achieve their full potential.
          SARGAM a socio-cultural organization formed in October 1986 by the efforts of Mr. Ajeet Kumar (founder of the society) in coordination with Mr. P.C.JOSHI & Mr. ANUJ SRIVASTAVA during their School hour’s long back in 1985, when they had direct interaction with their some colleague who were drug addicted. The above three friends then decided to make addicted peoples busy in some activity according to their interest. Fortunately, it was found that these addicted peoples were having a long time in their participation in local Ram Lila shows organized in the festive season of Dussahara .Mr. Ajeet Kumar who already had an experience of directing Dramas and other stage activities organized in those days for the public entertainment and social awareness, planned a brilliant way to enhance the lives of such people by making their talent bloom in this world .this was a good way to save such people from drug addiction. He started a production oriented workshop with these people and some other new comer’s .As a result of workshop, a comedy Drama was produced named “UNDER SECRECTARY” written by renowned writer Romesh Mehta and Translated in Hindi by Mr. Urmil Kumar Thapliyal .It was successfully staged in Ganna Sansthan, lucknow auditorim in 14 January 1987 which appreciated by print media of the state. This was the first leading step taken by the society and since then the society marched forward in other works too.

4. Udaan Welfare Foundation
        NGO has implemented several projects in the areas of Health and Education and in a small way restored the environment.  We are continuously growing and have gradually developing sustainable projects. Plans are afoot to involve itself in many more projects by which it can contribute more meaningfully towards the upliftment of the downtrodden and revitalize the human spirit.  The NGO continues to focus on key areas of Health, Education and Environment through its projects involving children, women and senior citizens.

5. Uday Foundation
     The main aim and objective of the Uday Foundation is to provide support services to the children afflicted with congenital defects, critical disorders, syndromes, and diseases that affect their health condition, education & growth.

6.LEPRA Society

                LEPRA India is a non-governmental organisation that promotes quality health care, initiates and fosters new developments and implementation..

The Society aims to support the National Health Programmes in the prevention and control of diseases such as Leprosy, Tuberculosis, Malaria, Lymphatic filariasis, HIV/AIDS and Blindness.

The Society focuses health improvement activities in the community that are marginalised or poor, especially women and children, young people, slum populations and migrants affected by the above mentioned diseases and tries to bring about positive changes in their life-style. The work in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand states targets a population of nearly 12 million

7.Pratham

 Pratham is the largest non governmental organization working to provide quality education to the underprivileged children of India. Pratham was established in 1994 to provide pre-school education to the children in the slums of Mumbai city. Since then, the organization has grown both in scope and geographical coverage.

8.Deepalaya

         Deepalaya is a non - government development organization working on issues affecting the urban and rural poor, with a special focus on children. It is because ‘Every child deserves a

chance’ that the organization exists and works towards making that possible. For the past 32 years Deepalaya has been working in the urban slums of Delhi and has also made inroads into rural development in the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

9. Goonj

 “ Making clothing a matter of concern..”

A unique resource mobilization initiative providing clothes and other basic amenities to millions in the far-flung villages by turning one’s wastage into a resource for another. Initiated in 1998 with just 67 clothes, we now send out 80 to 100 tonnes of material every month , in 21 states of India. A force of over 300 volunteers, GOONJ is implementing its various initiatives through over 150 grassroot organisations, panchayats, Ashoka fellows & social activists in parts of 20 states of the country. GOONJ has recently been awarded the 'Indian NGO of the year' award for its governance and practices.

10.Sammaan Foundation

      Established on January 25, 2007,their aim is to link the socio-economically most descendant class with the main stream by empowering them through training, capacity building, education and financial support. In India the unorganized section forms almost 20 percent of the total population. Of this 20 percent, 92, 00,000 are rickshaw operators with the majority of them being seasonal migrants.

  SammaaN Foundation are working towards organizing the rickshaw-pulling sector.They are constantly trying to bring this class under a uniform system by providing those opportunities to grow and strengthen their livelihoods.

        Employment generation, women empowerment, children’s education, health services and micro credit are the key areas where the organization is gradually making its leap.
